Clopidogrel Drug Information
Clopidogrel keeps blood platelets slippery and discourages formation of clots, thereby improving blood flow to your heart, brain, and body. The drug is prescribed to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, and serious circulation problems in people with hardening of the arteries or unstable angina (dangerous chest pain), and in people who've already suffered a heart attack or stroke.
Clopidogrel Bisulfate Uses
Clopidogrel is used to prevent strokes and heart attacks in persons who are at high risk. In one large study, clopidogrel was more effective than aspirin in reducing heart attacks. The frequency of side effects of clopidogrel was similar to aspirin; however, stomach and intestinal bleeding probably occurs less often with clopidogrel than with aspirin.
Clopidogrel Instructions
The usual dose is 75 milligrams once a day. To give people with unstable angina an extra boost, their first dose is usually increased to 300 milligrams. Each dose of Clopidogrel must be taken with a full glass of water of about 6-8 ounces. Clopidogrel is not a stomach irritant so it can be taken on a full or empty stomach.
What precautions should I follow?
Clopidogrel should not be used if you are taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs without your doctor’s advice such as, buprofen, naproxen, diflunisal. It is better to stop using Clopidogrel immediately if you are suffering from active bleeding disorders such as stomach ulcer or vaginal bleeding. Avoid taking the drug if you spot some allergic reactions in your body.
Clopidogrel side effects
Stomach upset or pain, diarrhea, constipation, headache, dizziness, rash, flu-like symptoms, or back/joint pain may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Clopidogrel rarely causes a condition called thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) in one out of every 250,000 people. TTP is a serious condition in which blood clots form throughout the body. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these signs of serious bleeding occur.
Clopidogrel Interactions
Your doctor or pharmacist may already be aware of any possible drug interactions and may be monitoring you for them. Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medicine before checking with them first.
If you are currently taking aspirin, consult your doctor promptly and ask whether to continue or stop taking it with Clopidogrel 75mg for your specific condition (e.g., aspirin and Clopidogrel 75mg may be used in combination after a coronary stent procedure, or for some heart conditions). If you are not currently taking aspirin, consult your doctor before starting it for any medical condition.
Before using Clopidogrel 75mg, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription/herbal products you may use, especially of: atorvastatin, "blood thinners" (e.g., warfarin, heparin), oseltamivir, tipranavir.
Some medications can cause Clopidogrel 75mg to work less effectively. Examples include proton pump inhibitors (such as omeprazole), fluvoxamine, fluoxetine, among others. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more details.
Check all prescription and nonprescription medicine labels carefully since many contain pain relievers/fever reducers (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs such as ibuprofen, naproxen, or aspirin) which can increase the risk of bleeding/anti-platelet effect when used with Clopidogrel 75mg. Ask your pharmacist about the safe use of those products.
This document does not contain all possible interactions. Therefore, before using this product, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all the products you use. Keep a list of all your medications with you, and share the list with your doctor and pharmacist.
